CONCRETE SURFACE PREPARATION

Concrete surface preparation is a critical foundational process that ensures optimal adhesion and long-term performance of applied coating systems, overlays, sealers, and repair materials. Inadequate preparation remains the leading cause of premature coating failure, delamination, and system under performance

Purpose and Importance

Proper surface preparation serves multiple crucial functions:

  • Contaminant Removal – Eliminates oils, dirt, laitance, curing compounds, and other substances that may compromise adhesion
  • Pore Structure Exposure – Opens the concrete’s natural pore network to facilitate mechanical bonding
  • Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) – Establishes the appropriate texture and profile depth required for specific coating or overlay systems
  • Performance – Creates ideal conditions for maximum bond strength and system longevity

CDPI employs industry-leading surface preparation techniques tailored to project-specific requirements:

Mechanical Methods

Mechanical methods physically remove material and create surface profile through abrasive action:

  • Shot Blasting – Propels steel shot at high velocity to clean and profile concrete simultaneously, providing consistent, controllable results with minimal dust generation
  • Grinding – Uses diamond or carbide-embedded discs to remove coatings, smooth high spots, and create uniform surface profile
  • Milling – Uses a drum with high-speed rotating carbide cutters, Ideal for removing thick coatings, leveling uneven surfaces, and creating a high-traction surface on sidewalks or ramps

Chemical Methods

Chemical methods dissolve or soften contaminants to facilitate removal:

  • Chemical Strippers – Remove concrete cures and sealers, adhesives, and stubborn contaminants through controlled chemical reaction
  • Degreasers and Microbial Cleaners – Eliminate oil, grease, and chemical contamination before mechanical preparation, ensuring optimal surface cleanliness
